About

Tracey Baker (born 1972, Newport, South Wales). A former professional in the care sector and a qualified riding instructor, now working as a ceramic artist from her studio in Cardiff. After taking a ceramic night class she returned to university and has gained her BA Honours Ceramics degree from Cardiff Metropolitan Univrsity (Howard Gardens).

Her primary focus is the creation of ceramics with sculptural applications, she considers both the nature of ceramics as a medium and its ability to address specific topics alongside hints within the text that acompanies her work. The understanding of materials, process and historical ceramic practice has a strong influence on the evolution of her work.

Her current work is inspired by the horses she trains and owns. It concerns itself with the close relationship with man throughout history and the role of horse in society today and the fact that the horse is facing one of its toughest periods in history.

She captures this fragility perfectly by utilising clays versatility and her ability to draw on her extensive knowledge of the horse.
